Kathy spent her college summers working swing shifts on a production line at a major carpet manufacturer's southern Alabama facility. In 1994, upon college graduation, Kathy spent two years with a home furnishings company as a night shift supervisor. A fellowship to Auburn University took Kathy back to her alma mater for a masters in business administration. Kathy returned to the textile industry in 1997 and held roles such as shift leader, process improvement engineer, marketing analyst, senior territory manager, and finally national account manager. In 2004, she took a position with FloorExpo as Vice President of business development.
